In case you missed it, High Country Press has reported that the North Carolina Department of Air Quality (DAQ) has put Maymead’s 421 Scenic Byway air permit on hold until the company can resolve ongoing violations at its existing asphalt plant in Boone on Highway 105. Here is a link to the story: http://bit.ly/1UHpTAt.
The nonpartisan, all-volunteer members of High Country WATCH were extremely disappointed to learn that Maymead’s existing asphalt plant in Boone has been operating in violation of environmental regulations since at least October 2015. We are equally disappointed to learn that an out-of-state company seeking to significantly expand its presence in Watauga County with the addition of a second asphalt facility on the 421 Scenic Byway continues to remain in violation of environmental regulations months after the initial notice was sent to the company.
Local residents Carolyn and Randall Henion are currently carrying forward an appeal to Superior Court to attempt to stop construction of the proposed asphalt plant on 421 Scenic Highway.
